SES’s Second-Generation Medium Earth Orbit Satellites toEnableConnectivityAnywhere in the Philippines

O3bm POWER satellites will deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband internet to power digital inclusion and connect the unconnected

SES, a leader in global connectivity solutions, and global satellite and space consulting firm NSR,an Analysys Mason Company, jointly hosted a virtual roundtable for Filipino media to discuss how satellite-based connectivity via lower earth orbit satellites can power digital inclusion and connect the unconnected, even in the most remote places.

Despite having the highest internet usage rates in the Asia-Pacific region[1] with more than 10 hours spent daily online, only 73% of the Filipino population has access to the internet[2]. The introduction of newer satellite technologies such as SES’s O3b mPOWER’s reliable high-perfomance, low-latency connectivity solutions are coming at a time where the country is currently undergoing an extensive digital transformation for closer participation in the global digital economy. With broadband internet identified by the government as an enabler for economic growth and competitiveness[3], components in the Philippines’ digital transformation framework include the strengthening of digital entrepreneurship, improving cybersecurity, technology skills development, and the building of digital infrastructure for better internet access.

At the roundtable session, which was attended by a select group of Filipino media, SES highlighted that to complement the country’s rapid advance towards digitalization, O3b mPOWER’s reliable high-speed, low-latency broadband internet services can help address Philippines’ digital inclusion and connect the unconnected. Through improved connectivity, platforms such as e-health and e-learning stand to be utlized by more people, collectively create positive social impact with enhanced Internet access.

About O3b mPOWER

SES’s new O3b mPOWER communications system is based on the proven impact of the existing O3b constellation. The O3b system is the world’s first and only commercially successful non-geostationary satellite system and delivers low-latency, high-performance connectivity worldwide. O3b mPOWER’s fibre-like speeds will enable the delivery of cloud computing applications and services to power digital inclusion, while connecting communities and industries regardless of the remoteness of their location.

Launch date

The first O3b mPOWER satellites are scheduled to be launched in Q3 2022.When its services become available in early 2023, O3b mPOWER’s reliable and fibre-like connectivity will play a key role in driving commercial and economic developments throughout the Philippines.
