This March 28 to 30, Venice Grand Canal at McKinley Hill is hosting Gunita: Twenty-Five Years of Romancing Earth, Wind, Fire and Water—a remarkable retrospective exhibition by acclaimed ceramic artist Rita Badilla-Gudiño. A pivotal figure in the Philippine ceramic arts community, Rita is renowned for her transformative impact on the industry through her work and for empowering a new generation of women artists.
Curated by Tahanan Pottery, the exhibition at the Venice Grand Canal will present the evolution of Rita’s artistry, a journey that spans a quarter-century of deep reverence for the elemental forces of nature. A highlight of the event will be Rita’s Artist’s Talk on March 28 at 4 PM, followed by the official exhibition opening at 5 PM. The opening program will also feature a performance by Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino (Kontra-GaPi), adding a rich cultural dimension with their music inspired by the indigenous sounds of the Philippines. Kontra-GaPi is an ethnic music and dance ensemble known for advocating indigenous peoples, human rights, and environmental protection. Gunita will run alongside Sining Pagluluad: A Contemporary Ceramic Arts Exhibition of Tahanan Women Artists, a showcase of works by the talented women of Tahanan Pottery, each an extension of Rita’s legacy and her enduring mentorship.
This curated collection aims to bridge tradition with innovation, inviting visitors to explore the synergy between art, history, and culture. In addition to the visual exhibition, the event will offer unique hands-on opportunities. On March 29, visitors can engage in a Mid-Scale Clay Sculpture Making Demonstration led by Rita herself, offering a deeper connection to the tactile artistry of ceramics. A series of interactive workshops will follow, including Mug-Making and Andito Ako Mask Tile Making, allowing attendees to experience the meditative process of working with clay.
The Tahanan Pottery team, including resident artists Johny Regala, Vicente Gudiño, and Tô Austria, will also facilitate pottery wheel demonstrations and exploratory trials on March 29 and 30. These immersive sessions are designed for both novices and enthusiasts, with opportunities to create personalized pieces and gain insight into the craft’s intricate techniques.
