SM Supermalls once again showed its continuous commitment to sustainable practices like this Earth Hour, by supporting the annual Global Lights Switch Off on March 23rd from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.
This year, SM went beyond the lights switch-off, encouraging public participation through a variety of eco-friendly and energy-saving activities and events.
At SM North EDSA, K-Pop fans used their lightsticks as alternative light sources for Earth Hour. They also joined in on eco-friendly pre-fan gathering activities, such as a plastic waste collection Idol Challenge.
85 SM Supermalls nationwide, including SM City Clark and SM City Cebu, gave an hour for Earth by turning off mall signages and lighting in key areas, reducing the total energy usage to 50 percent working capacity.
To #GiveAnHourForEarth, customers at SM Lanang and SM City Grand Central unplugged and enjoyed a fun acoustic session and fan gatherings.
This year saw 85 SM malls participating in the activities for Earth Hour. Through these efforts, SM Supermalls and SM Cares empowered customers to go beyond Earth Hour with practical tips for resource conservation and sustainable practices, emphasizing the impact a collective movement towards energy conservation and climate change awareness can make.
SM City San Mateo and SM City Marikina, encouraged customers with sustainable practices by deploying waste collection bins. Customers are able to easily dispose of their plastic waste and e-waste across SM malls even beyond Earth Hour
